Sønderborg, just 25 km from the German border, has been at the centre of the Danish–German wars. The area is therefore rich with historical legacies and monuments. The Dybbøl Mill, Sønderborg Castle and the History Centre, ‘The Dybbøl Banke’ are all symbols of the complexity or fascination present in a border area. Sønderborg also houses countless educational institutions. Industry is also firmly rooted in the area, with the biggest enterprise in Denmark, Danfoss, together with many sub–industries within engineering and agriculture – e.g. the JF factory, Denmark’s major producer of agricultural machines.
